NiSi Bluetooth Remote Instructions and Tips

Andrew Code

The NiSi Bluetooth Wireless Remote Shutter Control is designed for simplicity and efficient use, and allows control of the shutter speed directly from our new NiSi ND Calculator App (available on the Apple Store and Google Play). The app calculates the correct long exposure time for chose ND filters, and allows the triggering of the camera to start and stop the exposure at the calculated time using bulb mode. If shooting in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority modes, the NiSi Bluetooth Remote can be used as a simplified camera trigger for shooting in situations like taking selfies, group portraits, macro photography or even Astro Photography.

The NiSi Bluetooth Wireless Remote Shutter Control connects to a compatible camera using a cable (sold separately – available here) and then connects over Bluetooth via a phone using our app. The working range is 32 ft (10 meters) which allows you to trigger your shots from a distance.

Watch the video below for an in depth user guide for how to use the NiSi Bluetooth Remote Control paired with the NiSi ND Calculator App.

NiSi Bluetooth Remote Control Quick Guide

Follow the quick guide steps below to connect and shoot long exposures using the NiSi Bluetooth Remote Control and the NiSi ND Calculator App!

STEP 1 : CONNECT REMOTE VIA CABLE TO CAMERA

The NiSi Bluetooth Remote is designed to be easily connected to many different cameras including many Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji models via multiple interface cables which are all available to be purchased separately. Once the remote is connected to a compatible camera it will power on and be ready to connect via bluetooth to a mobile phone or tablet.

STEP 2 : CONNECT REMOTE VIA BLUETOOTH IN NISI ND APP

Once the NiSi Bluetooth Remote is connected to the camera and powered on, open the NiSi ND Calculator app on your mobile device your mobile device and select the Bluetooth icon in the top left of the app, and connect to the remote to the “nisioptics” device.

STEP 3 : CALCULATE BASIC SHUTTER SPEED (NO FILTERS)

The base exposure time is the correct exposure time shown on the back of the camera when doing a meter reading. This is the shutter speed that would expose the image correctly for you corresponding ISO and Aperture selections when shooting without filters.

STEP 4 : CALCULATE EXPOSURE WITH SELECTED FILTER

The next step is to select the filter you would like to use for the type of image you are looking to capture. You can dial in various strengths of ND filters and see the exposure time being output based on your initial base shutter speed.

If you would like to shoot bracketed exposures for blending in post processing, or just to maximise the potential of capturing the perfect exposure, use the “Exposure Compensation” dial for various bracketing steps.

STEP 5 : INSTALL SELECTED NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTER

Once you have set up the appropriate settings in the NiSi ND Calculator, ensure your camera is in bulb mode with the corresponding Aperture and ISO settings set. Then attach the selected ND filter to your lens ready for shooting.

STEP 6 : SHOOT! (PRESS START IN THE APP)

Once your ND filter is installed, you are ready to shoot! With your camera in bulb mode, the NiSi ND Calculator App will control the shutter by opening it when you press “Start”, and closing it when the timer ends.

* Please note – If shooting in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority modes, the NiSi Bluetooth Remote can be used as a simplified camera trigger for shooting in situations like taking selfies, group portraits, macro photography or even Astro Photography. The camera settings in these modes will control the shutter speed.
